Jason Aldean’s “Party” Continues Into Summer As Best Selling Country Album Of 2011
While My Kinda Party holds strong on the albums chart, the album’s current Top 10 single “Dirt Road Anthem” simultaneously claims the top spot on the all-genre ringtone chart for the fifth consecutive week and on the Country Digital Singles chart. To date, the track has sold over 977,000 digital downloads of its original version and recent remix featuring Ludacris combined.
Aldean’s fan-favorite track “Dirt Road Anthem” is the third single off My Kinda Party, which has already spawned two smash hits (“Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Kelly Clarkson and “My Kinda Party”). The album hit big out of the gate, setting a record as the highest first week debut by a male artist in four years, and the now PLATINUM disc has remained planted at the top of the charts since its November release.

Jason Aldean & Ludacris Become Fast Friends
“I never met him before, so we spent almost the whole day together, just talking and hanging out,” Jason tells The Boot. “I wanted to make sure it wasn’t weird when we actually got onstage together.”
When Jason was approached with the idea of doing a song with someone from the hip-hop community, he said he told CMT it would depend on the artist invited. “Some of those guys are hardcore rappers, but guys like him are more mainstream.”
When they offered the possibility of Ludacris, Jason then asked him to write a verse for ‘Dirt Road Anthem.’ When he heard what the performer had written, which referenced a six-pack on ice, a good southern breeze, Kenny Rogers and “Mr. Aldean, I call him Jason,” the singer said he knew it would work.
The decision to pair Jason and the Atlanta-based rapper/actor (whose real name is Chris Bridges) was obviously wise, as Ludacris advised his fans of the event prior to the show, and has now posted video of the performance on his website, exposing a whole new group of fans to Jason and country music. Jason reciprocated on his site, and additionally, the collaboration of ‘Dirt Road Anthem’ is available on iTunes.
“I thought it went off great and I had a blast performing with him,” Jason says. “We have each other’s numbers and if I go to Atlanta, I’m definitely calling him. He’s the mayor of that town, I think!”
Jason gave a rousing performance at the CMA Music Festival’s sold-out LP Field show on Thursday night (June 9). He resumes his My Kinda Party tour with Chris Young and Thompson Square on July 8 in Milwaukee, Wis.

Jason Talks to The Tennessean About Touring, Music Videos & More
After you won top new male vocalist in 2006, awards show nominations were slim — only 13 came in more than four years. You’ve picked up eight in the past six months.
It feels good, but it was a huge surprise for me. In the last few years, there’s been times when we felt like we had a really good year and had a really good shot and didn’t get nominated. I always said it’s one of those things that when it was my time and it was meant to be, it would happen.
The “My Kinda Party” video is up for three awards. Did you feel like it was awards show material when you filmed it?
(The nominations) surprised me a little bit because that video shoot could have turned into a train wreck really quick. We had a place to shoot the video, and an hour before we were supposed to start, they shut our shoot down. So in a matter of a couple of hours we had to go and find a new place to shoot.
What elements are required to make a solid Jason Aldean video?
On one hand, you want it to stay a little bit true to the song and capture what the song is about, and on the other hand, it’s cool to go out and almost just experiment a little bit. To me, it’s locking in to what I think the video should be about. I’ll have directors come and write a treatment for the video, and I’ll like part of it and then we’ll sit down and maybe have a rewrite to make it more me.
What do you avoid in your videos?
The only thing I try to avoid is making out with some other chick in my video that’s not my wife. That’s up front. It’s like, “If you need a scene with somebody making out, go hire somebody to do that because I can’t.”
What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened when you were making a video?
When we were shooting the “Hicktown” video, we were down in Florida. We invited a bunch of random people out to be a part of the video shoot. We had hired some models to come in to give the video something good to look at. People had been out there drinking all day, and in between takes, the guys would just randomly get in fights. We would have to stop the shoot, get the models and bring them backstage away from everything that was going on, let those guys beat the hell out of each other and then bring the girls back out and fire it up again.
After the CMT Music Awards, you’re launching the next leg of your My Kinda Party Tour on July 8 with Chris Young and Thompson Square. What are you excited about?
I’ve known Chris for a long time. I actually played on Nashville Star the night that he won. The last couple of years he’s really turned a corner in his career, so I’m excited to have him out. Thompson Sqaure, who are labelmates of mine, are off to a great start in their career, too. And I like them as people. That’s the whole thing about tours to me; I want to surround myself with people I like hanging out with. I think that vibe translates to the stage.
It seems like a lot people still haven’t realized the size of the shows you’re pulling off every night.
That’s been the funniest thing to me about the whole deal. I feel like from day one we’ve kind of flown under the radar. … I don’t know how it’s possible to quietly go out and sell out 25,000-seat amphitheaters when no one else is really doing it right now. But we have. It amazes me.

Buy “Dirt Road Anthem (feat. Ludacris)” Now on iTunes!
BUY “DIRT ROAD ANTHEM (FEAT. LUDACRIS)” HERE
Last night at the 2011 CMT Music Awards, top nominee Jason Aldean and rapper Ludacris brought the house down with an unexpected collaboration of Aldean’s current Top 10 hit “Dirt Road Anthem.” The remix of the song is now available on iTunes for download. Additionally, the performance video will be available on Mon., June 13.
“Ludacris absolutely killed his verse of the song,” said Aldean. “He name checks Kenny Rogers and talks about drinking cold beer…that’s pretty country, if you ask me! I think Luda said it best last night at the close of the song when he told the crowd ‘History has been made.’ It really did feel like one of those one-in-a-lifetime television moments, and the CMT Music Awards was the perfect show for it. The fans were crazy!”

Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem” is currently the No. one song on the iTunes Country Songs chart, and it plowed its way into the Top 10 on the radio charts this week. The fan-favorite track is the third single off MY KINDA PARTY that has already spawned two smash hits ( “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Kelly Clarkson and “My Kinda Party). The album hit big out of the gate, setting a record as the highest first week debut by a male artist in 4 years, and the now PLATINUM disc it has remained planted at the top of the chart since its November release.

Jason Aldean and His Team Describe Their Long Road to Success at Billboard Country Summit
Aldean’s career has often bucked conventional wisdom, in terms of its approach to radio and touring. Aldean’s managers (Clarence Spalding and Chris Parr of Spalding Management), Kevin Neal (president of Buddy Lee Attractions) and Rick Shedd (senior VP of operations, Broken Bow Records) joined Aldean in retracing his steps from his early days in Nashville — when he performed more than 40 showcases before landing a record deal — to his current headlining tour, which is seeing dates sell out impressively far in advance.
Neal said he recalls going to 10 showcases and wondering why a label wasn’t signing Aldean. The artist admits it was tough. “You get frustrated. Nobody shows up and you feel like you’ve wasted time,” he said of those early showcases.
He said most people don’t know but he had an early deal with Capitol that lasted a year, during which time he didn’t record any music. “I moved here in 1998 and my first single came out in 2005,” Aldean said of all the years he paid dues.
Then, when Aldean’s debut single, “Hicktown,” exploded, Parr recalled his first time seeing the video. “The ‘Hicktown’ video showed up on my desk when I was at CMT. It was like a bolt of lightening,” he said. “I started making calls: ‘Who is THIS guy?'”
Though most new acts head out on the customary radio tour, playing acoustic sets in conference rooms, Aldean took a different approach. “For an artist, that sucks,” he said of the promo tours used as a tool to court radio. “I didn’t do a radio tour. I said ‘if you’re doing any kind of festival, I’ll play it for free.” That tactic allowed radio personnel to see the full impact of Aldean live with his band — and it paid off. “That was the biggest impact at radio,” he said.
